“Visualize-Decoding: The Exhibition of Fan Yaping's Practice” opens on 2nd April 2015 at Exhibition Hall No. 1 of Beijing Today Art Museum. The exhibition features scores of oil paintings by the artist in the past ten years. This exhibition also includesworks created in the artist's teenage years. These works, published for the first time, explore the superficial images of the figures and their inner spiritual worlds. Her art portrays the mental status of people in modern society and provokes discussion and meditation on life which reaches the depth of the viewer's heart.

Curators remarks

Unlike the artist's earlier works that recorded the baby-like adorableness of a female growing up, Fan Yaping's recent works presented in this solo exhibition are filled with passion and imagination. She concentrates on various images – mainly portraits - from her personal experiences. The intention is not to define what image is, but to re-interpret image and conceptualize it into greater proportions. She constructs the double meanings of image in her paintings:. First as the figurative speech in the depiction and expression. Second, as the figurative narration of ideological quality achieved through pictural schemes. It is therefore easy to notice that Fan Yaping's painting is so full of life and emotional expressiveness. She often applies conventional and unconventional tools on the canvas. The colors sometimes seem to be flowing unrestraint and naturally on the canvas. Sometimes they are so thick in layers that the picture gives out a sense of being robust and thick. The brushstrokes are sometimes dancing in such care-free and relaxed spirit that the picture seems about to explode from the energy that converges in it. Fan knows well the relationship between details and the overall picture. She skillfully commands the relations between figures, sentiments, color gamut, concrete brushstrokes, the change of lines and rhythms. The paintings vividly re-present the spiritual and mental status of various figures that are either thinking, relaxing, lonesome, perplexed, anxious, rejuvenated or struck with sentimental moments. The artist's solid knowledge in psychology and philosophy enables her to incorporate these two subjects in the paintings so that these artworks acquire an interdisciplinary mentally therapeutic power. The "abnormal" and subtle people she created in the pictures effuse extraordinary sentiments of being twisted, split, terrorizing and mysterious.

Fan Yaping's works are both harsh and soft. They can be either powerful and resolute with masculinity, or subtle and soft with strong feminity. She endows many an image ultra objectiveness through subjective expression, and elevates the connotation of the images to a level far above the literal meaning of the picture itself. The paintings provide new perspectives and possibilities of interpretation. The "ecstatic" liberty and widely different taste demonstrated in Fan Yaping's paintings formulate a unique artistic language of her own.
