Exhibition Preface

Mrs. Saone Chang is the daughter of Mr. Chang Shuhong, who is known as “The Guardian of Dunhuang.” She follows in her father’s footstep and strives to preserve, promote, and study Dunhuang art throughout her whole life. In her early age, she copied Dunhuang murals with her father. She also started her career in the field of decorative and design art with Mrs. Lin Huiyin after returning back to China from the U.S. Saone caries on Mrs. Lin’s work of combining Dunhuang art with Chinese traditional craft art and reveals the beauty of Dunhuang art to people. As for her creative works, she applies the painting techniques of Dunhuang murals on her “Flower” series to establish a unique painting style.

The purpose of this exhibition is to carry on the traditional art and transform it into an innovative form of art. To express the idea, we combine classical Dunhuang decorative art designs analyzed by Mr. Saone with modern art crafts. The art crafts include cloisonné, adornments, porcelain, and so on. Our goal is to fuse classical art elements and the art crafts to make Dunhuang art more accessible and innovative to people in the modern age.

In the “Everlasting Beauty of Dunhuang: applying classical art elements to contemporary art” exhibition, there are Mrs. Saone’s copies of Dunhuang murals and “Flower” series as an entry point to show Dunhuang art’s influence on her study. This exhibition aims at introducing Dunhuang aesthetics to people so everyone can appreciate the beauty of Dunhuang art.
