Exhibition Preface

The designs of prominent Italian designer Gaetano Pesce purposefully advocate “Imperfection.” There is no shortcut to freedom. Pesce’s tireless pursuit of personalized design over the years has not been by chance. The seemingly unbridled design is the result of profound thinking from multiple perspectives. Facing these fantastical, philosophical home designs, it is not enough to define them as mere products. The artist has never seen design functionality as an unshakable dogma or a must-follow guideline.

This legendary Italian designer, architect, and artist has been active on the global stage since the 1960s, and exploration has been a key feature of his creative and design career for over half a century. Gaetano Pesce’s design is marked by an emphasis on nature, which is reflected in the exploration and application of the properties of natural materials, and in his concern for ecology. At the same time, he has never been one to avoid social issues in his creations, and claims that art is a form of commentary on reality. Through his design, he tries to draw people’s attention to certain social phenomena in need of improvement, giving his design a strong humanistic touch. He is renowned for breaking down the boundaries between design and art, rationality and sensibility, and for his mastery of the expressive powers of different materials. With his unique style, he opened a potential development path for the increasingly rigid design of the time.

This exhibition, titled “Gaetano Pesce: Nobody’s Perfect,” will present Pesce’s signature works, models, and manuscripts along clear threads spanning the past half-century. From classic home design to his architectural experiments in many places, more than 50 three-dimensional works including chairs, tables, cabinets, lamps, vases, product designs, architectural manuscripts, architectural models, resin paintings, and installations, as well as over 30 manuscripts and many images and documents, take the viewer into the whimsical world that Pesce has constructed with intense colors, innovative materials, and anthropomorphic shapes.
