Exhibition Preface

The Flower Garland Sutra proclaims, The leaves of the trees hold countless universes. The petals of a flower contain infinite realms. To see the whole world in one flower and to see the Buddha in one leaf! How can you describe this without personally experiencing it?

Towering mountains, vast oceans, and infinite galaxies are indescribable wonders of “great beauty”. The wonders we encounter every day are life’s ”little beauties”.

In my photography I try to capture the “little beauties” of life around me and transmute them into the wondrous beauty of infinity. I try to discover sublime treasures hidden in everyday life, to experience the great beauty held in life’s “little beauties”. This is the theme which inspires my works.

Beauty is always with us.

Beauty is not merely the aesthetic of nature. Beauty is liberation from weariness and confusion. It is the serenity which remains after our anxiety melts away.  It is our passion bursting forth when we break the bonds of worldly aesthetics.

In life and in nature, let the things you love touch you and inspire you. Give yourself time and be patient. Dare to explore, to experience in a different way. Only then can you savor the wonders of the world, calling out to you.

I have a double dose of anxiety. As I navigate our troubled times, the crisis of my middle age looms before me. I have taken this sudden pause in my journey to reflect, to restore my inner peace.

Sorrow and joy are reverse sides of the same coin, like Yin and Yang. Ups and downs sing life’s melody, filling our hearts with music. No matter how great our happiness, we cannot make it last forever. No matter how deep our sorrow, it will not burden us for eternity. Anxiety springs from life’s little sorrows. We must brush off our anxieties as common occurrences along the way.

Don’t cling to the past. Don’t become infected with the present. Don’t force yourself into the future.

The future is unknown. Life is a series of moments, unfolding sequences of the present. The meaning of life is to be here now, to value the present.  The present empowers us to continue our exploration, to discover ourselves, to achieve freedom and independence.

Look above you!  See the stars of the universe blooming in every tree!
