Exhibition Preface

The expressive oil painting in the northeast originated from 1980s. This specific northern area developed a great number of typical painters who enjoy using expressive way to express their subjective emotion and regional style.
During the past thirty years, this group of artists rooted in the white water and black mountains, continuously thinking about the problem of “modernity”. The rise and fall of the old industrial base also affected the emotion of these northeast oil painting artists.
Artists who participated in the exhibition all have close origin with the northeast culture. Most of them were born in the northeast, they also lived and worked in this area; some of them left the northeast, they lived and worked outside this area; and some young artists from middle part or even southern part, they also have the kind of teacher-student relationship or cultural identity with the northeast oil painters in different degrees.
Hundreds of paintings that exhibited in this exhibition could be regarded as a historical review of the northeast expressive oil painting. It is also a culture scrutiny that placed the northeast expressive oil painting in the contemporary art context. On the one hand, we hope to show the overall artistic features by this exhibition; on the other hand, we expect to re-examine the contemporary value of the northeast expressive oil painting in a multi-cultural context.
The theme “Art of Expressive Powers” comes from the overall style of the northeast oil painting; it also comes from this special group artists’ believed artistic appeal.
