It is believed that “!” was created by humanist scholars in Italy in the second half of 14th century. In fact, its precise birthplace is Florence, the heart of the Renaissance. That is why it is sometimes perceived as a possible celebration of the end of the dark ages in arts. It is also believed that “!” was come from Latin “io”, means the expression of joy. The Renaissance triggered a war against God that people started to rethink their own value and significance as humans. So human in that ages, in some sense, was the “!”.
We are very curious what “!” means to modern humans after its more than 600 years history. Does it still have its inherent revolutionary spirit in the Renaissance? Does the symbol still have the meanings of independence and awakening? Or it just combines too many modern emotional colors.
Let the children bring us into their “!” world with their brushes and works. You may see and find something new and “!” Or you may find your own“!”...... in you.——Curator Zhou Ying (Cherry)
