Exhibition Preface

The Chinese character, 品, is composed of three Chinese characters, 口, with 9 strokes in total, representing its primary meaning of plenty.

To art, it not only represents in the subject, but also in the object; not only in the level but also in the scope; not only in the result but also in the process. Nevertheless, it finally upgrades to a kind of attitude.
In 2013, the artist Zhang Fan prudently chose this Chinese character as the title of his works in his solo exhibition for three reasons as follows: Firstly, Zhang Fan is an artist who values style and quality in his life and works; secondly, his works “still have a sense of intrication and obscureness”, which needs further observation and appreciation; thirdly, what Zhang Fan pursues in his works is too misty and subtle which needs insistence and appreciation.

Being a rational artist who represents Chinese idea with his oil painting, Zhang Fan established a frame which contends his interest in brush-and-ink paintings, his respect to the traditions as well as his harsh demanding to the details. Through nearly 20 years during which he began his study in the Department of Print-making at Central Academy of Fine Arts till graduation with a Master Degree and then became a professional artist, there is only one thing that he has always concerned: is there any “taste” in his painting? It is just this simple but complicated pursuit that contributed to three parts in this solo exhibition: “hand scroll of water ”, “self-narrating” and “picking from reclusion”, which represents the cognition to this Chinese character “品” from a Chinese modest and intrapersonal attitude.
