Exhibition Preface

The abstract painting of Gonghong Huang has a unique way to trigger positive visual sensations such as passion, freedom, refulgence and rhythm, which are produced by a form language. It is a language about colors, lines, movements and space and the overall impression they create and present. In fact, abstract painting is by nature against the figurative, especially the narrative of painting and focuses more on the subjective and emotional expressions. The abstract painting of Gonghong Huang banishes everything that is figurative and adores form as form, color as color with great enthusiasm.

The painting of Gonghong Huang is full of intensive visual tension, a tension that is woven by the graphological spirituality and multiple layers of color space. To elaborate, the graphology, combined with colors and lines, builds up the rhythm and structure in his painting. This can all be traced back to his exploration of cursive font of the traditional Chinese calligraphy. With virtuosity, he adopts the “flow” in the calligraphy, its sophisticated rhythm and its delicate balance between total and part, strong and weak, movement and still, heavy and light, writing and painting. In the “movement of colors and lines”, he is generously expressing his passion. Looking at his pictures sometimes feels like looking at the bloody intestines via an endoscope and can be sometimes visually uncomfortable. But by staying longer in front of the pictures, we start to experience the emotions and energy emitted by them. The fanatic fly of writing and scribbling is interwoven by some flash-like lines. And the movement of lines reveals how the painter was moving in front of the pictures. He is pursuing the unpredictable and accidental in the pictures, symbolizing the ever-changing situations in life, the meeting and parting. This can not only be seen in his endeavor to revolutionize the substance of abstract painting, but also in his interest in the mysterious and his preference for the unpredictable things.

Colors like blue, red, yellow and green are used in Gonghong Huang’s pictures in a straightforward and courageous way and constitute an interesting form language. His painting language is heading for the aesthetic quality “the natural in the nature” and “the pure in the purity”.

“Visual indulgence – Abstract Painting of Gonghong Huang” is the first solo exhibition of Gonghong Huang after his return to China. 30 of his works will be shown which reflect his thinking and practice around abstract painting in the past ten years (2005-2013).
