Chinese Experiments: the Consciousness of Problems in Chinese Contemporary Art
The exhibition is the first annual presentation by the Experimental Art Committee of the Artists Association of
China. The event focuses on contemporary experimental art and endeavors to create a new form of presentation.
The exhibition itself is an experiment. Rather than displaying finished works, it exhibits and explores the
consciousness of problems in contemporary art, the thoughts provoked and the care and inquiry to the current
time. The exhibition took place at the 5000 sqm hall of Winshare Art Museum in 2011. Artists for this exhibition
at Today Art Museum features Wang Huaiqing, Sui Jianguo, Zhong Biao and Chen Wenling. The four artists'
cases are connected to one motif of experiment and expend themselves under four topics: Entry and Exit of
the Old Garden, Story of the Hanging, Total Disclosure in the End, and the Spontaneous Departure. Each part
is a combination of the artist's thematic rendering and the results of research by a team of experts. Plenty of
documents, information and videos are provided to explain the questions posed by the artists, to explore the
formation of the notion Home in the minds of the artists' generation, and the individual thoughts on the state
and future of the nation, as well as to clarify the subtle connection between the form of materialized works of
art and the metaphorical consciousness.
It is equally important to show in this exhibition the trajectory of the development of thoughts and concepts,
as well as the relation between individuals and the society. The fine selection of works and the multitude of
documents endeavors to elaborate on cutting-edge issues and experiment on new forms of display,
in order to diagnose closely the consciousness of the problems in contemporary art with academic rigorousness,
peeling off the perplexing cover and exposing the true problems to the discussion and aesthetic education of
the general public.
