Exhibition Preface

2000 years ago during the Warring States Period, the famous poet Qu Yuan referenced great volumes of Chinese mythologies and legends in “Heavenly Questions”, proposing 173 questions on the origins of the universe, natural phenomena, where humanity belongs, social realities, meaning of life, etc., in the format of inquiring the heavens, directly displaying the Chinese ancients’ curiosities and reflections of unknown territories. Chinese mythologies originated from oral traditions of ancient times, preceding written text, great volumes of mythologies and legends were documented in early works including “The Classic of Mountains and Seas” (Shan-hai Ching), “Master of Huainan” (Huai Nan Zi), and “Verses of Chu” (Chu Ci), gradually establishing the structure for the ideologically diverse Chinese mythologies encompassing philosophy, art, religion, humanities and history, and science. Mythologies not only reflect ancient individuals’ earliest imaginations and beliefs of the world, they provide reasonable explanations to their pursuit of the universe's origins and understanding of life’s conditions, while simultaneously creating a mysterious yet magnificent mythological world through a long history of progression.
