Exhibition Preface

On November 21, 2025, the large-scale solo exhibition "My Name is Red" by artist Ma Yanhong officially opened in Hall 3 of the Today Art Museum. This exhibition is planned by curator Bao Dong, focusing on Ma Yanhong's creative journey spanning over 20 years. It gathers more than 60 paintings and installations, systematically sorting out the evolution of his artistic concepts and visual language. "My name is red" comes from the title of the novel published by the Türkiye writer Ferit Orhan Pamuk in 1998. With this unique title, this exhibition focuses on Ma Yanhong's creation over 20 years, and focuses on more than 60 pieces (groups) of paintings and installations, trying to fully present the artist's conceptual process and the change of artistic language. As the exhibition theme, 'My name is Red' first refers to the artist Ma Yan's' Red 'self. Secondly, "red" also metaphorically refers to women as gender identities. In ancient Chinese, "red" and "silk worker" generally referred to women's production operations, such as spinning, sewing, and embroidery. 'Red' also means a past Chinese experience, a collective interest in cultural traditions, and a Chinese 'red'. Finally, 'red' also serves as the 'red' of lights and wine, pointing to human nature. From individuals to women to Chinese people to human nature, 'red' serves as a clue throughout the entire exhibition. The red color exposed at the junction of the building structure in the exhibition hall is also a response to the theme. The exhibition structure takes Ma Yanhong's creative period as the clue, and then combines the theme, theme, artistic language, and style for consideration. It is roughly divided into three stages, including eight series.
