Cheng Yong has special experience during his teaching at Nanjing Technical College of Special Education. He realizes that the cognitive style of the blind is very different from the normal.
The blind understand the world through obstacle, while the normal, disclosure. However, according to Cheng Yong’s, understanding, obstacle is not only important for the blind but also for the
normal, since, basically speaking, all cognition originates from obstacles. Without the obstacles, the transparency is same with opacity. And so any knowledge is obstacle in the sense of both
concealment and disclosure. Cheng Yong illuminates this profound and complicated philosophy with his paintings, sculptures, installations, videos and performances, which all have minimalist style.
From Cheng Yong’s art, we can get not only visual enjoyment, but also enlightenment and inspiration.
