Seminar Introduction
Subthemes:
“Exhibition
as An Expression of Contemporary Art History: Problems and Forms”
“Literature, Methods and Logic for Study on Contemporary Art History”
The Overview of Symposium:
Though the concept of “contemporary” is theoretically considered to be an instant moment and some philosophers have advocated that the “art history” of the traditional meaning no longer exist in the Post-modern Era, there is an equally obvious fact: contemporary art has undoubtedly formed its own history, extending along the timeline of different times with the accumulation of theoretical and visual modes. Therefore, the study on the history of contemporary art has an important position in the explanation and study of contemporary art, supplementing the theoretical construction and art criticism. Based on such an understanding, this Symposium intends to inspire diversified discussions on the nature, ideas and manners for the expression of contemporary art history: are art movement & trend, art style and “master works” still the basic concepts in such expression? How should exhibitions with times as the axis—including retrospective exhibitions and comprehensive exhibitions of the contemporary art in certain periods of time—be organized? How can the geographical factors be included in the chronological expression of global contemporary art history? The organizers of this Symposium hopes that the participating scholars and curators can express their opinions on the above questions and on other relevant issues, so as to carry out constructive discussions.
