The global competition event in its second edition is hosted by the Bureau of Culture of the Beijing Municipality, operated by the Foreign Cultural Exchange Affairs Center of the Beijing Municipality and Beijing Today Art Museum. 

The subject of this year's design competition is monkey, the animal of the year 2016. All materials of the "Zodiac Culture +" may be used in the design work. We believe that this is a great platform for you to show your talent and emotions for art and culture. Your participation will give this traditional Chinese culture a modern imprint. About the competition

The competition is a joint project by the Bureau of Culture of the Beijing Municipality and Beijing Today Art Museum, dedicated to the promotion of the Chinese zodiac culture, popularity and involvement of the Joyful Spring Festival celebration. The first edition was held in 2015, year of the sheep. It is developed into an annual event. The competition is commissioned by the Bureau of Culture of the Beijing Municipality to the Foreign Cultural Exchange Affairs Center of the Beijing Municipality and Today Art Museum. 

About the Subject

Joyful Spring Festival / Golden Monkey Welcoming the Spring

Monkey is the closest to the people among the twelve animals in the horoscope. It symbolizes cleverness, intelligence, bravery and livelihood. Monkey is regarded an embodiment of wisdom and talent. It is much beloved by the young people. There are many stories featuring the monkey in Chinese classic literature, such as the Monkey King in a Journey to the West. The Golden Monkey Welcoming the Spring is a vivid expression of people's joyfulness about the arrival of the new year and their best wishes for the new year.

Requirements for participating works:

1. The participating works should be original. Copying or using works of others shall cause the application to be invalid. 

2. Participating work shall not contain contents in conflict with the laws and orders of the People's Republic of China. The works shall not contain discriminating contents relating to gender or religion. Contents shall not infringe the personal rights of others. The organizers do not take any liability with regard to copyrights or portrait right. The participant himself/herself shall resolve any matters related to these rights and ensure that no damages shall occur to the organizers.

3. The application consists of a draft of the design, name of the work, description of the design and the application form. 

4. The electronic draft of the design should be in JPG format and RGB color mode. The file shall not exceed 5 Megabytes. The concept of the design, impression drawing should be provided with description of the craftwork, sizes, etc.

5. In the case that the requirement in paragraph 4 cannot be met, please contact the organizer in advance (Ms. Li at the telephone number +86 01 58760600-102).

6. The design should follow the subject Joyful Spring Festival / Golden Monkey Welcoming the Spring. The graphic design of the monkey shall incorporate the history and meaning of the cultural program in celebration of the Spring Festival and express joyfulness and good wishes of the season. The design can combine the cultural background of the participant and be culturally characteristic and meaningful.

Copyright and related Issues

The application of the participant is deemed as an unconditioned transfer of the following rights to the organizers of this event – the Bureau of Culture of the Beijing Municipality and Beijing Today Art Museum:

1. The right to reasonably use the portrait and name of the participant for promotional purposes;

2. The rights to exhibit, to broadcast on radio and television, to print and publish, to produce in photos, video and broadcast on the internet, to cover in news reports;

3. The right to develop derivative products on the basis of the participating works.

The organizers protect the lawful copyrights of the participants during the competition period.

The Prize Assessment

Procedure of Assessment: a board of 7 judges shall make the assessment. There will be 1 winner of the 1st Prize, 3 winners of the 2nd Prize and 5 winners of the 3rd Prize.

Prize Bonus

1st Prize: 20,000 RMB Yuan

2nd Prize: 10,000 RMB Yuan

3rd Prize: 5,000 RMB Yuan

The prize bonus is funded by Beijing Today Art Museum.
