Exhibition Preface

West and East: the Austrian painter Xenia Hausner has been exploring this exciting space in the contemporary globalized world. In 20 middle to large-sized works she plays with mutual perceptions in a way that is as subtle as it is profound. What at first glance seems to be a snapshot of daily life is in reality a multiply refracted and reflected perception of life in a world in which cultures are intertwined.

This new collection, “Look Left – Look Right” focuses on the mutual curiosity and attraction that looms between East and West.

In accordance with her usual expressive technique, no clearly realistic scenes are discernable. She prefers applying elements from various cultural environments to create a new fragmented reality: an Asian and a European girl in school uniforms, connected through a global symbol of capitalism; three Western women in front of a propaganda billboard; people between cable assemblies and neon lights, between nature and urban civilization.

Her work “Survival” shows a simple, older woman – maybe she lives in Beijing – sitting before a wall and in a state of mourning. She is surrounded by various objects of daily existence. Amidst this daily routine a figure breaks into the picture from above. We don’t know whether there is an emergency or whether we are witnessing a carefully planned attack. At any rate the situation seems contradictory. The pictures tell stories, reflecting real life, while evading precise legibility.

“Look Left – Look Right” is the most recent offering in an ongoing dialogue in the art world regarding the mutual perception of East and West. Through her own artistic strategy of staging the meeting of the cultures in her own studio Xenia Hausner takes the discussion to a new level.
