Exhibition Preface

"Old as the State of Zhou is, new reform is its mission." is a 3,000 years old line in ancient Chinese historical literature, which is often quoted to prove that reform on the basis of the old has always been a unique way out for Chinese culture when it is in crisis. It is used to activating contemporary artistic imagination through continuously and imaginatively reconstructing a classical ancient example, and the barriers of times are assimilated with tacit knowledge. Chinese fine brush painting as a school of art which is seemingly very Chinese and very traditional might be able to open a new path for us.

Contemporary fine brush painting intends to restore the poetic tastes of daily life and natural aesthetic interests characteristic in Song Dynasty. The methodology of knowing the world through the study of things advocated by the Song and Ming philosophers is also re-presented. The modern assimilation of these ancient concepts lies in the application of a new touch of blurred and thinned textures on the basis of the old and creating a fresh new texture and touch. The ancient sentiment of time is infused with the air of young dreams and becomes fascinating, deep and subtle. It is also accompanied with new allegories of imagery mutation. We are able to gain a glimpse in the fine metaphysics and the most tranquil and deep dreams, so that the anxieties and troubles of modern times are dispelled.

The exhibition Reform on the Old at Today Art Museum is very helpful in our contemplation of a new possibility for contemporary art through new fine brush painting, a new method of analyzing contemporary art. It will connect between a great tradition of Song Dynasty in China and the contemporary western visual techniques. "Old sentiments" and "dreams", the basis of an old form and a new-born spirit are the imaginative integration of time. It is the most fundamental direction of visual construction for art in the future.
