Exhibition Preface

Yu Qiucheng’s ‘painting’ is a poetic abstraction of “Orientalism”. It has the aesthetic characteristics of the waste products and perfectly combines the painterly nature and the inexpensive found objects. But Yu’s ‘painting’ is more of a ready-made art of the painterly nature than the paintings in their real sense.

In his way of painting, Yu sees ‘visual ready-mades’ in the perspective of painting. More interestingly, the production of art is a kind of ‘reprocessing’. Firstly, the processing industry manufactured aleatory objects for visual material. And as an individual creator, Yu ‘reprocesses’ the objects which were first ‘processed’ by the manufacturer. This looks like a metaphor of the labor-intensive industry in South China. The processing industry has never thought of itself as the creator of a pre-art form. And as a factory owner, Yu reinvests ‘aesthetic processing’ into this form with his vision as an artist. Processing industry has thus completed the conversion, injecting a classy and avant-garde horizon into the ‘leftovers’ of high-class fashion accessories, which are transformed into intellectual and artistic products of higher class.
