Who are "Seeds in Yunnan"? It is a name that I call those students who were born in the remote villages and towns of Yunnan and Sichuan during the 1980’s. They went on to get modern university educations far from the lands they grew up and learned to employ their artistic creativity to expess the relationship between nature and contemporary culture. 

 Who am I? I am an artist, who was born in the 1950’s of the last century and who was struggling during his youth with fierce changes during the seventies and eighties and who now lives in Kunming.

 In 2002 I started to teach in the School of Art and Design at Yunnan University. In 2004 I first taught in the second art studio. Because of such an opportunity I came into contact with these "Post 80s" students. I began to find a creative spirit in them and participated in training them over the following 10 more years. I devoted huge efforts and had large expectations for their development. The reference of "Seeds in Yunnan" is full of my love and hope to them, to the new generation.

 My generation grew up in a tough environment. We had lots of paradoxes during those times about how to choose direction in the crisis of social consciousness. Though those years have past we still can't always let go of those romantic feelings which brew our dreams. If not for our ideals and dreams a lot of things these days wouldn't happen. If myself, Zhang Xiaogang, Pan Dehai, Ye Yongqing and all those artists in Yunnan hadn't organized "New Figurative" exhibition and "Southwest Art Group" and had not responded positively to the cultural context of the 80 's and intervention, then what could we use to pay homage to our youth, to prove our existence? 

 The experiences we accumulated from the 1980s gave me a chance to find the features in those "Post 80s" students. They are born with original natures and an affinity with the land. They were born pure. Some students were even born in primitive Hani, Miao, Yi, Bai tribes. They appear in front of us with unspoiled natural instincts which are rooted in their heritage. They are showing some special qualities which are totally different from those who grew up in the cities. Those kind of special qualities gave me a strong curiosity and fantasies. I naturally put my feelings and focus about the future into those "Post 80s" seeds. Such good seeds deserve good achievement and they need my experience to guide them on the road to a more pure creation.

 Only in their familiar way of life can they be more fully inspired by nature. We use a special way to teach in Guishan village, a simple village with primitive life and  a mysterious atmosphere. It leads them to their familiar lifestyle to tell them that the experience of combining nature and land is also an important element in contemporary art.

 Artists who were born and live in Yunnan enjoy an excellent natural environment and multi-ethnic 

 mountains, rivers and the poor and primitive yet mysterious villages. They gain their inspiration from them. However with the new fast paced economic development our relationship with nature is no longer harmonious. Our environment suffers under the big price of developments these days. Fresh air, green fields and those things we didn't care too much for in the past as Yunnan locals now became common problems today. They become a contemporary problem. Nature is an eternal topic, not only because she is our mother but because she is our Muse also. If we are far away from her, it weakens the poetry of life and charm. Only she can give us the most raw power of creativity.

 "Seeds in Yunnan" are the artists who have the most natural affinity with the lands. They are artists who create art works while participating in farming work at home. They are able to perceive and capture the subtleties of the Muse. They are translators between the Muse and us. This is my hope and dream too.

 With simple traits and creative values they've gained the community's attention in the past few years. Many top curators and galleries have invited them to participate into all kinds of exhibitions and collect their works. It also provided a bigger space for them to learn, which is very precious and encouraging to them. From contacting the very first batch if students until today ten years have passed. They still have their original purity. They think about the contemporary proposition of art even deeper. It makes me happy and encouraged too. Because of the different experiences of my younger days, and my attempts to lead them in to contemporary art creation according to my judgment, I am always being tested. This is a question of growing and also of art. 

 I am very grateful to Today Art Museum to give us an opportunity to have this exhibition. It gives art works from "Seeds in Yunnan" a chance to show their works in front of visitors again and to receive more stringent criticism. Also thanks to Yunnan University for giving them the opportunity to receive a better education and the opportunity of teaching those students to me.
