Exhibition Preface

"Over the Mountains" origins from a flowing plot with long-lasting emotions. For many years, Liu Maonian regularly drives alone into the remote areas in Tibet, Southern Gansu and Xinjiang, where only ethnic minorities dwell. With such persistence he holds on to the inseparable emotional connection and care for things"beyond the mountains" and sticks to the practice of outdoor live painting in pure primitiveness.

The exhibition is a retrospect of Liu's works created outdoor. It features the essence of his individual art style with a self-conscious meditation on the propositions of contemporary art. His techniques of splashing, wiping and piling of colors effuse passion and tensile force of an exotic land. The pulsing vital power leaves deep impression in the viewers.

Liu Maognian graduated from Xi'an Art Academy and currently lives in Beijing. He is one of the few artists who persist for decades to work inthe field. It is worth noticing that the inspiration from working outdoor is not limited to figurative presentation. The artist breaks away from the figurative imagery and maneuvers between
figurativeness and abstractness to find the balancing point of self-expression. The thick piling of colors and the condensed and pouring emotional power leave a fast and violent trajectory. However, they are not the result of conscious thinking or planning, but capture moments of life, which preserves the heavy and strong reality in eternity
