Exhibition Preface

Today Art Museum, as a pioneer of China's private art museums has always been devoting itself to the exploration of the nature and boundaries of art. As visual art and behavioral art are generally accepted and acknowledged, the question would be whether sound is able to exist as an independent form of art.

The essence of the spiritual content in art is its concept. In the process of the concept's self motions, spirit and its means of expression convey the concept through sensible forms. Music works exactly in this model. As spirit gradually detaches itself from the external sensible materials, it bears the spiritual connotations of music by means of an artistic rendering. At the same time when sound is extracted from music, and with the sense of hearing as the fundamental start point of sounds, which direction will the art of sounds go?

In this project, Dadawa brings us the more abstract art of sounds and presents pure conceptual artistic expression. Sound Art formally appeared in the end of the 20th century. It advocates the respect of sound itself and emphasizes the subjective listening rather than the process of creating. Sound art, with its rhythm and acoustic sources, is more conceptual in comparison to painting art on the basis of visually perceptible lines and colors. The unique nature of being unambitious and ultimately liberal binds it closer to the inner world of the subject.

On behalf of Today Art Museum, I cordially invites you to enter this architecture of sounds built by Dadawa, to explore your own sense of hearing, to feel with your heart and to listen to an exhibition.——Alex Gao
