Exhibition Preface

The possibility of contemporary Chinese artwork being invigorated by an unexpected return to one of the original tributaries of modernism is an appealing feature in the recent paintings of Juju Sun.Inspired by French Impressionism, Abstract Expressionism, and the natural, flowing style of Chinese brushwork, Juju Sun's recent paintings reintroduce these former painting modes with a fresh attitude and timely intelligence. Many of the canvasses glitter in an opalescent symphony of carefree melodies. The painter magically materializes shimmering water, fecund earth and dancing light with each knowing turn of her brush across nearly thirty canvasses. After many years of study in Manhattan, Ms. Sun's painting thoroughly and systematically absorbed the lessons of Abstraction as well as the extemporaneous vigor of "En plein air" painting. This marriage--using a freely intuitive line--has further evolved into an exploration of traditional Chinese graphology since her return to China. The result is an original and fertile artistic synthesis that maps new aesthetic ground. The artworks are also refreshingly devoid of any irony as she has appointed a subtle and poetic naturalism to the painting’s exposition in line, color, and form. The elements of Nature itself have been summoned for our pleasure in the paintings of Juju Sun.
